The Yellowstone prequel 1923 is making waves once again on The Paramount Network and Paramount Plus, featuring Jack Dutton, portrayed by Darren Mann, lending a hand to Jacob (played by the legendary Harrison Ford) with some errands about town. Darren has been part of the show since its beginnings, and his character has already seen his fair share of trials.
The 35 year old Canadian actor, best known for his stirring performances in Giant Little Ones and Embattled, clinched a Leo Award for his role as Ballas Kohl in Giant Little Ones. On the small screen, fans might recognise him from Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as Luke Chalfant.
Hailing from East Vancouver, Darren was born into the arts with his mother Lenore Mann—an actress and director. With acting in his veins, inspired by his mother, he embarked on his career at just eight years old, dabbling in stage and film roles.
Yet, it was hockey that initially stole his heart. Putting acting on the back burner, he pursued the sport fervently, eventually playing pro before an injury at 21 cut his sports career short, propelling him back to his first passion—acting.
His time on the ice wasn't forgotten, though; he briefly played for the Indiana Blizzard in the now defunct All American Hockey League. Reflecting on his youth with the Vancouver Sun around the release of Embattled, he drew parallels between the film's narrative and his personal experiences, sharing: "Growing up I had an older brother that took me absolutely everywhere with him and we didn't have a dad growing up.", reports the Mirror US.
The actor opened up about his family's sacrifices for his childhood passions, particularly hockey. "My mom had to work whatever job she could so we could play hockey and stuff. I was really blessed with a really great role model of a brother."
He also reflected on his own experiences that helped him prepare for the role, adding some personal history into the mix: "In some ways I actually got to channel a little bit of my own brother and what that was like."
Beyond these snippets about his sibling, he spoke frankly about the challenges he faced due to his father's struggles. He shared that his dad grappled with substance abuse, saying "wasn't the most reliable".
On the brighter side of things, Darren is happily married to Jesi Deemann, with the couple having celebrated their latest wedding anniversary in December 2024. He took to Instagram to share his feelings, gushing: "I can't wait to continue this wonderful adventure together."
